Why construct a completely new building when you can give a second life to an old one? Justin Kirby refurbishes an old ‘Save a Lot’ building to open his own new funeral home.

In Russellville, Kentucky, Justin Kirby will open a new funeral home in an old ‘Save a Lot’ building. For the local community the old building of 14,000 square feet has been an eyesore, sitting empty for years.

In a search for property to open his own family  cemetery, which can be serviced by his funeral home Kirby stumbled into the abandoned ´Save a Lot´  property and genius struck. Instead of looking for a typical piece of land why not help give a city sore spot a much needed face lift. He decided to take the unwanted land and refurbish it into a much needed community space.

There is still a lot of work ahead but Kirby said: “The inside, as well as the outside, will be totally redone. There will be an entrance in the middle and the facade will be modern and sleek.” They are also planning on having a chapel that can seat just over 300 people.

Justin who comes from a long line of funeral directors said: “Growing up in this business, it has always been special and in my heart. It’s much more than making money. For me, it’s helping people during one of the most difficult times in their lives. I love to help people.”

The opening of the new funeral home is expected this fall.
