South Dakota funeral home is purchased by a local young family

It all started in the late 1800´s when the Medin Brothers started a Furniture and Undertaking business in Dell Rapids. In 1906 it changed hands to another family member and was sold to the current name sake, the Kahler family, in 1968. The Kahler´s loved and managed the property for years until they passed it on to their son 28 years later in 1996.

Fast forward to 2003, Mr. Kahler made a handshake deal with local Ross Brende, who had just returned from Dallas (with a degree from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Services), to take over the business when he retired.

Seventeen years later and the time has finally come for Brende to purchase the funeral home. Out of respect to the Kahler family, Brende said they decided to keep the Kahler name on the business, and added Brende to the hyphenated new name.

The new Kahler-Brende Funeral Home started under new ownership on January 1st. It’s an exciting time for both families, as a legacy continues and the business continues to grow into the future.
