Hospices, largely funded by charities, are foreclosing and more will follow if no measures will be taken.
Staff Shortages
The Observer revealed that UK’s National Health Services is battling staff and funding shortages. Currently 3,500 hospice care professionals are needed to continue with just standard hospice care. Multiple hospices have already been forced to close due to a lack of funding. The ongoing problem will reportedly affect more than 100,000 people, who are in need of hospice care. Hospices UK stated that 80% of the hospices, which rely on charity, will go into the red numbers next year.
Lack of Government funding
Dr. Amy Proffitt, Vice President of the Association of Palliative Medicine, mentioned that the extra £25 million ($32.2 million) in funding from the government is “merely a drop in the ocean”. She stated that hundreds of million are needed to really take care of the current issues, for just her unit alone she needs £21 million ($27 million).
The numbers speak for themselves and are an outcry to the government, companies and the public to donate to charity in order to provide the right care for dying individuals.
