Trappist Monks give back by making coffins available to families in need.
New Melleray Abbey, was founded in 1849 by Cistercian monks from Mount Melleray Abbey in Ireland. The monks have been able to keep the abbey running and continue their lives dedicated to God through their casket making.
Trappist Caskets
New Melleray Abbey launched Trappist Caskets in 1999 and shortly after began selling caskets and urns directly to families at wholesale costs. Together with the assistance of a few craftsmen, the monks work to create beautiful handmade caskets that are made from the trees on the property’s forest and locally sourced materials.
Each casket is blessed by the monks and includes a cross that is engraved with the loved one’s name to keep as a memento. They also plant a tree for each purchase in honor of the loved one to replenish the forest that supplies the wood for these holy caskets.
The monks help COVID-19 victims families
While the monks already regularly give back to the grieving with their child fund, where they support families who lose a child by providing a casket. They want to extend their support further to those most impacted by the coronavirus.
The monks want to help financially stressed families directly impacted by the COVID-19 virus by offering a free pine casket. The monks do ask that families who inquire assist with the shipping (which could be as low as $50 or at a max high of $275). While there is a limited supply available the generosity of the brotherhood will not be missed by these families facing incredibly difficult times.
