Lawmaker Cristina Garcia has introduced Bill AB 2592 to legalize natural organic reduction of human bodies in California. After legalization in Washington, both Colorado, and now California are taking steps in making this disposition method available for the public.
The controlled decomposition of human remains was introduced by Katrina Spade CEO of Recompose, and has gotten overwhelming attention from media around the world. The method is a new sustainable alternative to the current disposition methods like cremation and burials.
In Washington, the new law, legalizing what is commonly referred to as decomposition, goes into effect on May first. Recompose is preparing to open the first funeral home offering a patented version of the process in the state starting early 2021.
The deceased who select this option placed in a special recompose vessel along with important enzymes that accelerate the decomposition. After the decomposition about a cubic yard of highly nutritious soil is left per person which will be returned to families or donated to a local state park.
If the bill gets passed, California would be the second state to legalize this new type of burial service and Californians will be able to opt-in for a more eco-friendly burial. Assemble member Garcia has indicated that Recompose is ready to make the option available to Californians by 2021 if the law can be passed.
