After 5 years of negotiations and building, the Red Deer Hospice society was finally able to open their $5.2 million hospice expansion. The addition increases the existing ten rooms to sixteen private palliative care spaces. There is also now room available for respite care and caregiver relief, day programming and palliative education.
Evelyn Storm, the facility’s executive director, said: “Not only will the additional 15,000 square feet allow for increased community programs, it means Red Deer Hospice Society will be able to help 100 more families each year.”
Wendi Ronspies, President of the Red Deer Hospice Society Board of Directors: “As a Board of Directors, we wanted to design a space that would serve our community and this building truly will.”
James McPherson, chair of the expansion fundraising campaign, said the grand opening was the “culmination of a lot of work and great vision.” “However, while the building is now complete the province doesn’t provide funding for the construction”, said McPherson. Meaning the society is still seeking donations to raise the remaining $2.6 million in capital and construction costs.
